“Meditation” Mandala Exhibit at Texas Discovery Gardens – Thru Jan. 6th

If you are looking for something fun to fill the days as we move from autumn into winter, check out the new “Meditation” art exhibit at the Texas Discovery Gardens in Fair Park. Running Sept. 11th, 2015 through January 6th, 2016, this unique show features the work of local artists and professor Brenda McKinney. McKinney has repurposed and recycled materials such as paint sample strips, lottery tickets, and greeting cards to make beautiful wood-mounted mandalas. In the Hindu and Buddhist traditions, mandalas are geometric figures with repeating patterns intended to represent the universe. In other contexts, mandalas are thought to represent the search for completeness and self-unity. In all cases, mandalas are typically complex, colorful, and stunningly appealing to the eye – a real pleasure to contemplate and view.

 

In this exhibit, McKinney says,

“Using the symmetrical design of the mandala, I capture images and symbols that affect our visual perception in the constant flow of our information age… I focus on the contemporary metaphors of social and cultural realities.”

Admissions to the Texas Discovery Gardens includes access to this temporary exhibit and gives you access to the 100% organic 7.5 acres of public gardens, the butterfly house, noontime butterfly talk/butterfly release, and all the facilities’ other offerings. All-inclusive ticket prices for the Discovery Gardens are as follows: $8 for adults, $6 for seniors (60+), $4 for children (age 3-11), and free for children under 3. On Tuesdays, admission to the Discovery Gardens and art exhibits is free for all – but in order to enter the butterfly house on free Tuesdays, purchase of regularly priced admission is required.
